Hennessy was founded in 1765 by Irishman Richard Hennessy in Cognac, France, after serving in the French army. Initially a trading business, it quickly grew into a major cognac producer under his son, James Hennessy. By the 19th century, Hennessy had become the world’s largest exporter of cognac, aided by its strategic partnerships and focus on international trade. The brand formed a key alliance with the Fillioux family of master blenders, a relationship that continues to this day. In 1971, Hennessy merged with Moët & Chandon, forming Moët Hennessy, which later became part of LVMH. Today, Hennessy is the top-selling cognac globally, known for expressions like V.S, V.S.O.P, X.O, and limited editions, and it remains a symbol of luxury and heritage worldwide.
