Jack Daniel’s Distillery, founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel in Lynchburg, Tennessee, is the oldest registered distillery in the United States. Daniel learned distilling from a preacher and enslaved man named Nathan “Nearest” Green, who became Jack Daniel’s first master distiller. The whiskey is made using the Lincoln County Process—charcoal mellowing—which defines Tennessee whiskey. After Jack’s death in 1911, his nephew Lem Motlow took over the distillery, navigating it through Prohibition, the Great Depression, and World War II. Despite being located in a dry county, the distillery resumed production in 1947 and grew into a global icon. Today, Jack Daniel’s is one of the best-selling whiskeys worldwide, with core expressions like Old No. 7, Gentleman Jack, and Single Barrel Select.
